Jeera Rice Recipe
Jeera Rice, also known as cumin rice, is a popular dish in Indian cuisine. The dish is characterized by its fragrant aroma and nutty flavor, which is derived from the liberal use of cumin seeds (jeera in Hindi)in the recipe. The rice is typically cooked in ghee or oil, which enhances the flavor and aroma of the dish.
Ingredients
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 2 tbsp ghee / clarified butter
- 1 tsp Cumin (Jeera)
- 2 cups water
- Salt
- mixed vegetables lemon juice, grated coconut, peanuts, cashews, etc.
Instructions
Pre-Cooking Prep Steps:
- Rinse the rice thoroughly in water to remove any dirt or impurities.
- Soak the rice in water for 20-30 minutes.
- Chop any vegetables you plan on using, such as peas, carrots, and beans.
Cooking Steps:
- Heat the ghee or oil in a pan over medium heat.
- Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add the vegetables, if using, and sauté for a few minutes until they are cooked.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pan.
- Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pan with a lid.
- Let the rice cook for 18-20 minutes or until the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked through.
- If using lemon juice or grated coconut, add it now and mix well.
- Lastly, add the roasted peanuts or cashews and mix well.

- The key to making perfect Jeera Rice is to ensure that the rice is cooked through but not mushy.
- The addition of vegetables, lemon juice, grated coconut, peanuts, and cashews is optional and can be adjusted to personal preference
