Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup black lentils / sabut urad dal
  • 3 tbsp ghee / clarified butter / ghee
  • 2 onions
  • 3 to Tomato
  • 2 green chillies
  • ½ tsp Cumin (Jeera)
  • 1 bay leaf / tej patta
  • 10 cashew
  • ½ inch ginger
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • ½ tsp Garam Masala
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • water
  • coriander leaves / cilantro

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Assemble all ingredients together to avoid last minute rush.
  • Rinse and soak sabut urad dal or black lentils in plenty of water overnight.
  • Finely chop onion, ginger, garlic, green chillies and fresh coriander leaves.
  • Make puree with 3 large tomatoes and cashews.

Cooking

  • Set IP on saute mode and add ghee first.
  • Then, add cumin and bay leaf and then, chopped ginger and garlic. Saute them for few seconds.
  • Then, add chopped onion, green chillies and tomato puree.
  • Then, add all spice powders and saute everything well until onion and tomato puree cooked well with spices.
  • Now, add the soaked and drained lentils, salt and close the IP.
  • Cancel saute mode and press pressure cook or manual mode. Set time for 35 minutes.
  • Once done, let pressure release naturally for 10 minutes.
  • Check the consistency. Simmer again in saute mode if required to thicken the dal for another 5-10 minutes.
  • Your Maa ki Dal is ready to serve!

  • Soaking black lentils: Soak the lentils preferably overnight for easy cooking and proper digestion.
  • Ghee or butter: You can use butter in this kali dal recipe to make it creamy and more flavorful.
  • Salt & Spices: You can vary the quantity of spices and salt as per taste.
  • Consistency: Also, you can adjust the consistency of kali dal by adding more or less water.
